Micro-Surfacing

Micro-Surfacing has many benefits and can remedy a broad range of problems on today’s roadways. A relatively new technology, micro-surfacing is recognized as a cost-effective way to treat a variety of road surface problems. Micro-surfacing is comprised of aggregate, polymer modified emulsion, water, cement, and additive (aluminum sulfate), all of which have to be precise in ratio.
The system uses specialty live bottom nurse trucks with two tanks mounted on each side for water and emulsion. In a cost-saving measure, Sunroc lumber delivery trucks were used and retrofitted with a live bottom conveyor system. Geneva’s Berkamp M1(E) paver is the second of its kind built in the U.S. and uses a EMCAD system (electronic monitoring computer controlled) for all calibrations, rationing, and mixing.

Key benefits

  • Traffic can be returned to surface within 30 min.
  • Can be placed at night
  • Stacking of material (multiple lifts)
  • Economic alternative to chip seal, slurry seal, open graded surface course, and other surface treatments
