Major Utah Employer, Geneva Rock Products, Makes Investment of Over $8 million in Cleaner Air Technologies Wed, 18 Jan 2017 23:10:08 +0000 →]]> Company Purchases New Fleet of 25 Eco-Friendly Natural Gas Ready-Mix Concrete Trucks and Installs a New CNG Fueling Station

South Salt Lake, UT— First in its industry, Geneva Rock Products invests over $8 million in a new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station and fleet of 25 CNG Ready-Mix Concrete Trucks. The new fueling station is located on their property in South Salt Lake, and can fill all 25 trucks simultaneously. The new cleaner-running CNG fleet has significantly lower emissions than its diesel counterparts: 50% less fine particulate matter and 90% less carbon monoxide. Geneva Rock’s investment into clean air and sustainable practices is even more significant as it is among the largest air quality investments made by any construction company in the state of Utah.

“We all share ownership and responsibility for Utah’s air quality. We applaud Geneva Rock for leading its industry by making this significant investment in new clean natural gas concrete trucks to help contribute to a better air quality solution,” said Ted Wilson, executive director at Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR). “There is no silver bullet to solving Utah’s air quality, but every small change adds to a collective bigger step toward better health, a better economy and better overall quality of life for all of us.”

“Geneva Rock is excited to announce a new eco-friendlier fleet of 25 CNG Ready-Mix concrete trucks and a new innovative CNG fueling station. Lowering our emissions is of upmost importance to us as a company and guides our overall operating decisions,” said Jim Golding, president at Geneva Rock. “This specific purchase and installation is just part of the company’s overall clean air initiative, in which the company has already invested more than $30 million to lower emissions and improve Utah’s air quality.”

Geneva Rock Products materials are found in buildings across the Wasatch Front. When considering materials for streets and interstate infrastructure, it is estimated that 50% of the roadways from Brigham City to Santaquin have been produced with Geneva Rock material.

“It is important to Utah and the local economy to have proactive businesses do what they can to help resolve our air quality issues. Geneva Rock is one of those companies that has continually invested in clean air technologies for their operations,” said Senator Gene Davis, minority leader at Utah State Senate. “I am proud to have this installation and new fleet of concrete trucks in my district as they service the entire Wasatch Front.”

“We commend Geneva Rock for its commitment to clean air in Utah,” said Brad Markus, customer relations general manager at Questar Gas. “The company’s investment in a clean-fueled fleet and onsite compressed natural gas fueling station is an excellent example of how a business demonstrates leadership when it comes to being a good environmental steward and in using an American-produced fuel.”

Geneva Rock’s CNG trucks will be the largest fleet of concrete mixers in the state, and perhaps the only one. Geneva Rock is the first ready-mix contractor to own and operate a natural gas filling station in the state of Utah. The CNG filling station and fleet are just part of the company’s $30 million clean air initiative to help improve Utah’s air quality.

“Geneva Rock is always looking for ways to give back to our city, making them a true community partner,” said Mayor Cherie Wood at City of South Salt Lake. “We are excited they have been so proactive in their investment to help clean our air. Thank you Geneva Rock for caring about the health of all of our residents.”

In addition to this announcement, Geneva Rock donated $25,000 to the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR) to support their grants and education programs in 2017.

Unified Fire Practices Trench Rescue at Geneva Rock Operation Wed, 09 Mar 2016 19:30:17 +0000 →]]>

Geneva Rock Products was happy to host the Unified Fire Authority yesterday for a day of firefighting drills and instruction. Geneva Rock employees aided in the drills by constructing an 8-foot L-shaped trench where dummy victims were placed in life threatening situations. Unified Fire Authority firefighters took turns practicing trench rescues in these mock scenarios. We are happy to participate in projects and events that benefit our community. Thanks to Unified Fire for allowing us the opportunity to assist, and to our Safety Department and every employee who spent time working on this project.

Geneva Rock Employees Recognized with UDOT Silver Barrel Award Fri, 20 Nov 2015 22:35:41 +0000 →]]> In the early morning hours of September 10th, 2015, a Geneva Rock crew was busy working on a five mile mill and fill job in Taylorsville on Interstate 215.  As paving crew superintendents Cody Clark and Joel Robertson drove across the project site, checking in on the scheduled work, they noticed a massive black cloud of smoke coming from a nearby 20-unit apartment complex.

Without hesitation, Clark called 911 and the pair drove over to the apartment complex where they ran door to door, waking residents and pulling adults and children from the burning building.

“It was unbelievable how fast the fire grew,” said Clark. “Within fifteen minutes, the entire place was engulfed in flames, and luckily we were able to get everyone out by then.”

The fire was a complete loss, with damages estimated at $1.5 million.Geneva Rock Silver Barrel Award

“The fact that everyone got out OK and there were no injuries or fatalities given the time of morning, it was at 3 a.m., is just phenomenal that that even happened,” said David Ulibarri, a Public Information Officer with Unified Fire Authority.

Robertson and Clark said they don’t consider themselves heroes. Just guys who were lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

“I think anyone else would have done the same thing, under the circumstances,” said Robertson. “We weren’t concerned with our safety, its one of those things that you just do.”

On Thursday November 19th, Carlos Braceras, Executive Director for the Utah Department of Transportation, recognized Clark and Robertson for their quick actions that most likely saved many lives that night.

The Geneva Rock Paving Superintendents were awarded UDOT’s Silver Barrel award – a recognition calling attention to and thanking the employees and UDOT partners who excel beyond expectations. This was only the third time in three years that the award was given to anyone other than UDOT employees.

“These guys dropped what they were doing to literally save lives,” said Braceras. “We are proud to include these men in our UDOT family.”

Geneva Rock is proud of the legacy our employees continue to build on behalf of Building a Better Community. Congratulations to Joel Robertson and Cody Clark for this distinguished and well deserved award.

I-80: Silver Creek to Wanship Thu, 12 Nov 2015 18:14:07 +0000 →]]> On one of the most heavily-traveled highways in Utah, Geneva Rock Products has spent two summers paving roughly 377,521 square yards of concrete in reconstructing a seven-and-a-half-mile stretch of I-80 and replacing a 328-foot bridge.

The I-80 Silver Creek to Wanship project was awarded to Geneva Rock Products by UDOT in April 2014. The $35 million job reconstructs the roadway and an existing bridge between U.S. 40 junction and Wanship, and is just one of various construction projects included in the Renovate I-80 campaign.

Geneva Rock crews got to work in July 2014, where crews reconstructed the eastbound lanes. This summer, crews have reconstructed the westbound lanes and the westbound bridge over Silver Creek. Project completion is set for next month.

Project Manager Dexter Tan said the project has come with its fair share of highlights and challenges, including a shortened summer schedule in 2014.

“In winning this job, we committed our crews to completing the entire eastbound section in what was realistically half a summer,” Tan said. “While we didn’t get to start until July, great planning and efficient logistical work, combined with a break in the weather allowed us to accomplish the work on schedule. Not often does the weather permit us to pave through November.”

Crews used newly released 3D paving solutions on the westbound portion of the project. Using the recently released Trimble 3D wireless system in conjunction with the Gomaco paving setup, crews created more access on the side of the paving lanes, created better access for wet haul trucks and eliminated a tripping hazard for finishers and laborers working alongside and behind the paver.

Cody Preston, Area Manager over Concrete Paving, said this project provided some 3D firsts for Geneva Rock, Trimble and Gomaco, who worked together to set up the machine to perform paving techniques none of the companies had done yet wirelessly.

“We were all on site those first few days to get it perfect together,” Preston said. “Trimble and Gomaco had never paved with a Zero Clearance paving setup with this system and we were able to work together to do this successfully on our tight shoulder paving.”

In addition to nearly eight miles of 12-inch concrete paving, the job required the creation of a unique pavement base material called cement treated asphalt base (CTAB), which provides a strong and stable base for the concrete paving to ensure durability and longevity, especially with the heavy weight being transferred along the route regularly by semi-trucks.

CTAB is created by pulverizing existing asphalt and then adding cement powder and water into the material to create a low strength concrete.

Often, in concrete paving, concrete is laid directly over a thin layer of asphalt. In situations where the existing asphalt is deteriorating and not suitable for a base layer, CTAB can be used to provide the needed structural support for the concrete paving.

On this section of I-80, CTAB was selected as a lower cost, environmentally friendly pavement base option. According to Nathan Schellenberg, Vice President of Construction, this is the first instance in Utah where a cement treated base used 100 percent recycled asphalt.

Bridge demolition and reconstruction, cast-in-place concrete barrier, rock blasting and storm drain work were other vital parts of this project.

In total, more than 74,000 Geneva Rock man hours will be spent on the project.

When complete, Utah residents, tourists and the many over-land haulers will have a beautiful, long-lasting freeway that will provide smooth and safe transit from Park City to Wanship on historic I-80.
